As Volunteers Week draws to a close, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank our 50-strong team of volunteers, who have given us 3,750 hours in the past year – THANK YOU!
Liz is one of our volunteers and here she is, helping out at our recent Medieval Medicine event..!
Liz took time out to let us know about her experience as a volunteer at the Visitor Centre:
“I started volunteering at the King Richard III Visitor Centre about 18 months ago. My children have grown up and it was a perfect time to get more involved in a subject I love – history! I also work as an Administrator for the NHS, in mental health services – a job that can be very stressful at times.
“Volunteering at the Visitor Centre is a great way to enjoy interacting with visitors and bring medieval history alive. Thanks to programmes such as ‘Horrible Histories’ children love to hear gory stories. Yes, King Richard did have parasites in his tummy because his servants didn’t wash their hands after going to the toilet!
“There is a great team here at the Visitor Centre, who will help and support you, as well as additional resources such as books and talks that are made available to volunteers. Social events including quizzes are also in the calendar, as well as a Christmas and summer get together.”
There is a range of volunteering opportunities available at the Visitor Centre, including:
– helping to tell the story of King Richard III
– supporting school visits
– delivering our programme of events (sometimes in costume!) at weekends and during school holidays
– helping in our shop and cafe and generally ensuring our visitors get a great experience throughout their visit
