This International Women’s Day, we recognise the extraordinary determination and impact of Philippa Langley, the driving force behind one of the most remarkable historical discoveries of our time.
It was Philippa Langley’s research, persistence and belief that led to the 2012 excavation in Leicester that uncovered the remains of King Richard III beneath a city centre car park. What began as a personal passion became a global story, reshaping historical understanding and capturing worldwide attention.
As a screenwriter and historian, Philippa challenged assumptions, brought together experts, and championed a project that many initially doubted. Her work ultimately led to the identification and reburial of Richard III, and transformed Leicester’s place in the national story.
Her achievement is a powerful reminder that history is not only uncovered in archives and excavations, but also through courage, conviction and collaboration. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate Philippa Langley and all the women whose passion and perseverance continue to shape how we understand the past.
