A couple of weeks ago, we were delighted to celebrate a very special milestone at the King Richard III Visitor Centre. Shona marked 10 years as part of the volunteer team!

Over the past decade, Shona has helped bring one of history’s most remarkable stories to life for thousands of visitors, sharing her passion and knowledge with everyone who walks through our doors.

We asked Shona what inspired her to join the volunteer team and what volunteering means to her.

“After seeing Richard III lying in state at Leicester Cathedral and realising it was such an important historic event, I visited the Centre to see where he had been found... another incredible moment in history. That sparked my interest because I’ve always loved history.

A little while later, I was looking for somewhere to volunteer and remembered the Centre and 10 years later, here I am.

I love this role because you get to tell visitors Richard’s amazing story, his life, his death, and of course, his discovery. One of my favourite moments is hearing the most common reaction when visitors see his grave: first they ask, ‘Is this where he was?’ and then comes the inevitable, ‘Wow.’

I think it’s an honour to now be part of that story, and to help keep Richard’s story alive.”

Shona’s passion, warmth and dedication have made her an invaluable part of our team, and we are incredibly grateful for everything she has contributed over the last 10 years.

Thank you, Shona, for helping us share King Richard III’s story so brilliantly. Here’s to many more years ahead.
